It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It is commonly used to create graphics and logos, resize and crop photos, alter colours, stitch multiple images together, remove unwanted image elements, and to convert between different image formats. GIMP can also be used to create basic animated images in GIF format. Gimp is often used as a replacement for Adobe Photoshop
